Brangwyn The Rescue

The Rescue by Brangwyn Warrington Museum

FrankBrangwyn 1867 – 1956

23 February – 31 May 2008

A stunning exhibition celebrating the work of Sir Frank Brangwyn the first British artist to receive world-wide recognition in his own lifetime. The exhibition presents works on paper – drawings, watercolours and a selection of prints – on loan from the University of Wales Bangor, work from the Gwynedd County collection and work from our own collection.

Brangwyn is described as a jack of all trades, as well as painting and drawing he produced  designs for stained glass, building interiors and was an illustrator of books. From his earliest work he displayed a natural command of draughtsmanship.

He did receive some formal training, firstly from his father and later from the famous artist and architect William Morris, but it was his conviction and determination to succeed that drove him to be the most honoured artist of his time. He was knighted in 1941 and honoured with a retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1952
